Our History

Research Laboratory Services (RLS) was established in 2002 by Peta Thiel. Peta graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) from Griffith University in Brisbane. She then worked at the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant on the Sunshine Coast as a Process Chemist for 4 years. This provided Peta with invaluable practical hands on operational experience in all aspects of a full scale potable water treatment plant including:
  • Plant monitoring and optimisation
  • Routine laboratory analysis of water samples (both chemical and microbiological) from catchment, treatment and distribution
  • Development of the Lake Baroon catchment management plan
  • Operation of pilot plants including manganese greensand for manganese reduction and ozone/BAC for organics reduction
  • Algae identification and counts
  • Cryptosporidium sampling, concentration and identification method development
  • Microcystin testing using HPLC and ELISA methods
Analysis and assessment of water treatment chemicals such as alum and powdered activated carbon

When the decision to upgrade the Landers Shute WTP was taken, Peta was responsible for the evaluation of the various technologies being considered, complete with community presentations and consultation. She oversaw the selection of the preferred treatment technology, Ozone / BAC, and travelled to Europe for extensive training in the world’s best practise techniques for the laboratory evaluation of the process.
Our Experience

Peta has a keen interest in all water treatment plants and with great enthusiasm has visited plants all around the world, in addition to attending conferences to make sure RLS remains at the forefront of world’s best practices in both plant operation and laboratory techniques.

Peta is the only practising scientist in Australia that has been to Paris to be trained in the Joret method of Biodegradable Dissolved Organic Carbon (BDOC) analysis. She is also the only person who has been trained in Amsterdam in the van der Kooj method of Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC) analysis.
Our Team

With Peta’s leadership and a small team of specialist water treatment professionals, RLS ensures that it can meet the evolving demands of the water treatment industries and assist our clients to meet their water quality objectives by drawing on both national and international experience.

Perhaps the greatest advantage offered by RLS lies in the teams’ ability to draw from first-hand experience of a vast network of sites, projects and treatment technologies from around the world. This enables us to provide a first principles evaluation of a project and the data being generated in the lab, for how best to optimise a process or design.
